AAI17012 - R Programming Stage 1
AAI17012

R Programming - Stage 1 (previously R Programming – an Introduction) is the basic R Programming one (1) day short course for beginners and those seeking refreshment in R Programming.

R is a very popular open source programming language that excels in statistics, visualisation and data analysis. Its most significant advantage is that there are now several thousand add-on packages that are available to perform specific analysis tasks, and the whole ecosystem is free of charge.

This course will teach the basics of using R, focusing on data import and manipulation, visualisation, and simple statistical tests. We will also explore how and where to get help if you run into difficulties, and how to extend or customise the capabilities of R. Familiarity with computers and basic programming experience of some type is helpful, but no specific knowledge is assumed.

Who Will Benefit?

Students beginning a research program that requires data analysis skills
Researchers and academics who wish to explore modern statistical languages
Industry practitioners who wish to process data using R.

Program Topics

Basic Data Import
Data formats
The Data Frame
GUI IDEs for R
Factors and tabulation
Managing Datasets
Summarising, Manipulating and Concatenating Data
Basic Array Operations
Linear Regression
Analysis Of Variance
Plotting Data with ggplot
Multivariate data plotting techniques
Writing Functions
Extending R capabilities with freely available packages.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Import data into R, manipulate it and clean it.
Visualise the data and perform simple statistical tests.
Perform simple statistical tests, and explore and re-use their results.
Extend R’s capabilities using free statistical software packages obtained from the Comprehensive R Archive Network.
Obtain documentation and learn new skills rapidly.
 About the Presenter
Sam Ferguson is a Lecturer in the School of Software, Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Technology, Sydney. He has used R in a many of his approximately 35 publications in areas as diverse as spatial hearing and loudness research, to sonification, emotion, and tabletop computing. He has 10 years’ experience teaching programming and technical topics, and has taught numerous subjects at the postgraduate and undergraduate level at the University of Technology, Sydney, the University of Sydney and at UWS. He has been a research fellow or assistant on more than 6 ARC research projects (many of which used R as their primary data analysis language).

Prerequisites already arranged
Held in a UTS computer lab – software provided.

Fees
Full fee - $800 (GST free)

UTS Alumni and staff- 10% discount
2 or more from the one organisation - 15% discount
Scholarship - 20% discount
Interstate participant - 25% discount

Please select discount option with drop down box before entering your credit card details.
